The monsoons though have proved to be in favor of cable TV operators this season, with the DTH signals dropping out in the rains and the DTH service coming to a stop amidst the ongoing FIFA worldcup football matches. The digitalization of cable TV is one more add – on for opting back to the most tried and tested medium of entertainment. So don’t wait till you miss the next match or your next favourite soap and grumble against the lucrative packages that caught you, rush to your cable wallah and enjoy better and improved services.
In a surprise and a turnaround announcement to the business plans of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG), the telecommunications vertical has acquired Digicable, a leading cable TV services company of the country, thus marking its foray into the cable TV distribution platform. The merged business of the two companies is expected to create India’s largest and world’s fifth largest company to offer Triple Play services catering to the plans of the company to reach consumers through four screens – mobile, TV, cinema and computers.
However, it is yet to be seen whether Rcom would retain Digicable’s inherent offering of cable TV services or would gradually make use of its new found subscriber base to market its DTH operations. The chances of the latter happening are much more, thus adding fuel to the concerns of MSOs to be overtaken by the DTH operators in the rat race for survival.
