3G Reality Show

Ramesh 1Faster connectivity, a host of value added services like Internet TV, video-on-demand, audio-video calls and high-speed data exchange will soon be a reality in India with the government finally implementing the action plans for auction of 3G spectrum last month. With a base price of Rs.3,500 crore for one 3G slot, the auction is likely to garner Rs 50,000 crores for the  government. The auction will set an interesting precedent in India’s telecom sector that could push up bid prices at the next sale of the precious radio waves needed for faster data transfer and better voice quality. The highest winning bid in the auction, whenever it takes place, will be the floor price for the next auction of spectrum. The 3G services could potentially bring about a social revolution comparable to the mobile boom as it spreads internet to the hinterland bypassing computers. The spectrum will be allocated in September, which means 3G services may begin only early next year.
