Nripendra Misra’s term as the Trai chairman ended, but his replacement has not been named so far. Now, it’s learnt that a decision on the new chairman may well be taken by the next government. In other words, the seat may not be filled for at least the next two months. This is despite the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) coming out with an advertisement for the post in February, and several dozen candidates applying for it.
Among those shortlisted by the government-appointed search committee for the post of Trai chairman are Anil Razdan (former power secretary), Y S Bhave (department of consumer affairs secretary), Arun Ramanathan (finance secretary) and Johny Joseph (Maharashtra chief secretary). Although DoT secretary Siddhartha Behura did not apply, his name is also being considered. Till the time, Misra’s replacement is found, Trai member A K Sawhney would take on the responsibilities of the chairman.
